Mathing with Dan and Bianca gives a glimpse of what mathematics looks like to working mathematicians.

Your hosts

Bianca Viray is an arithmetic geometer living in Seattle, Washington. Her research focuses on rational and algebraic points on varieties, particularly exploring different ways that geometry influences arithmetic. Bianca does her best mathematics in supportive and joyful communities, and is passionate about making such spaces available to all. She loves bright colors, math communication, puzzles, board games, and Seattle summers.

Dan Erman is an algebraist, living in Kailua, Hawai’i. His research focuses on how algebraic structures like multigradings get translated into geometric data, often in surprising ways. Dan believes that even when mathematics is challenging, it can be a joyful and enriching experience, and he is dedicated to building collaborative research and classroom communities. He loves competing with Bianca at Wordle.

Dan and Bianca met the summer before starting the Ph.D. program at the University of California, Berkeley in the prelim study class. They became study buddies and then office mates, and have been friends ever since.
